CHARLOTTE, N.C., August 12, 2013 —The Baker & Taylor Foundation and Baker & Taylor, the world's largest distributor of digital and physical books and entertainment products, today announced the winners of the 2013 Jean Srnecz Memorial Scholarship.

In 2009, The Baker & Taylor Foundation established an annual college scholarship in honor of former colleague Jean Srnecz, to support the higher education of Baker & Taylor employees' children. This year, Baker & Taylor is pleased to announce they are awarding two college scholarships.

Bethany DeMik, who will be returning to Olivet Nazarene University as a sophomore this fall, and Perla Garcia, who will be entering the University of Nevada, Reno as a freshman this fall, each received a $3,000 scholarship. This will be the 6th and 7th Jean Srnecz Scholarships given to date.

Arnie Wight, CEO of Baker & Taylor, said, "We are thrilled to honor Jean by awarding two scholarships this year, and proud to recognize and encourage two very worthy recipients who are passionate about their studies."

Bethany is the daughter of Michelle DeMik, a Lead Clerk in the Receiving department in the Momence, IL service center. Bethany graduated in 2012 from St. Anne Community High School in St. Anne, IL with a grade point average of 4.28 and was ranked number 3 in her class. Bethany was accepted last year to Olivet Nazarene University, in Bourbonnais, IL and plans on continuing to pursue her nursing degree.

Bethany says, "I can genuinely benefit from trying to improve someone's life and health all while making new friends in the process. Thus, I believe going into the healthcare field is one of the best things I can do with my life."

Perla is the daughter of Maria Garcia, a Processor in the Reno, NV service center. Perla graduated with a GPA of 4.19 and was in the top 6% of her class of almost 500 students at North Valleys High School in Reno, NV. Perla will attend the University of Nevada, Reno in NV this fall where she will begin to fulfill her dream of becoming a pediatrician.

"My aspiration is to provide unconditional care for our world and in doing so positively impact the lives of many...I will never give up, but will keep moving forward no matter how rough it may be," said Perla. "I believe that dreams can come true and if you set your mind to it you will achieve the impossible."

Jean Srnecz was on Continental Flight 3407, which crashed Feb. 12, 2009 outside Buffalo, N.Y. Jean was highly regarded within the publishing industry, not to mention very dear to Baker & Taylor. The Baker & Taylor Foundation, a nonprofit organization led by Baker & Taylor, established a college scholarship in Jean's name to annually support the education of a child of a Baker & Taylor employee.

Congratulations to our two 2013 Jean Srnecz Memorial Scholarship recipients!
