Baker & Taylor Business Update from Amandeep Kochar
Baker & Taylor( 09/16/2021 )

At Baker & Taylor, we fully support our customers' missions to enhance literacy and learning in their communities. Over our 193-year history, we have weathered many challenges together, and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has required us to adapt and find new solutions during unprecedented times. It also continues to impact our business both directly and indirectly. Below is an update on specific impacts and how we are working to address them. We will be providing frequent updates going forward.

Staffing

  • Like many companies, we are experiencing staffing challenges in our distribution facilities.

  • The B&T team is working nonstop to address our labor shortage and we are beginning to see warehouse staffing levels improve.

  • We are working as hard as possible to restore expected service levels while closely monitoring new COVID-19 variants and will continue to keep safety at the core of our business decisions.

  • We know you've experienced delays - sometimes significant, with processed materials and titles missing on-sale dates. We sincerely regret any service interruptions and inconvenience this has created.

Transportation

  • Our freight and shipping carriers are also experiencing labor shortages and unprecedented demand and usage.

  • We anticipate that shipping disruptions will be an ongoing challenge across industries for the balance of 2021, particularly as we approach the holiday season.

Inventory

  • As you may already know, publishers face staffing constraints in their supply chain, particularly printers, and the shortage of materials, including paper.

  • We continue to work with publishers to increase inventory purchasing aligned with our library partners' recovery and ensure timely inventory turn-around.

What can you do?

We recommend pre-ordering titles early to ensure timely delivery of releases. Late orders and re-orders will likely experience a higher rate of delay. We also encourage libraries to reach out so we can work together to streamline processes to help control future costs and improve turn times.

Please contact your Baker & Taylor Customer Service team or your Sales Consultant to review how we can mitigate any potential delays for your library and assist you with process improvement projects. We appreciate your ongoing support and partnership as the industry continues to recover from the pandemic.

Best,

Aman Kochar
